The Ugandan government has announced its intention to build an ICT innovation center worth Shillings 7 billion ($ 1.91 million) at the Ugandan Institute for Information Technology and communication (UICT) in Nakawa, a suburb of Kampala.

It was revealed by the Minister of Information and Communication Technologies, Judith Nabakooba. She stressed that the center which will house 300 innovators will provide them with an adequate working environment for their training and the incubation of their innovative ideas.

According to Minister Judith Nabakooba, construction of the ICT innovation center will begin in June and the work is expected to take a year. She said ICT is seen as a major tool for building a modern knowledge society, and digital innovation has the potential to provide unprecedented solutions to meet the basic needs of society.

This center therefore offers an opportunity for Ugandan innovators to set up projects that will contribute to improving the living conditions of the populations.

Irene Nakiyamba, Director of UICT, said that when completed, the ICT innovation center would help build a sustainable economy based on digital technology. This technological contribution will help the country to align with global changes.
