Telecel Ghana launches a $70 million project to modernize its telecoms network
In February 2023, Telecel acquired Vodafone Ghana, a struggling operator in a market dominated by MTN . Since then, the group has been ramping up its efforts to gain market share and strengthen its position.
Telecel Group launched a major network modernization project in Ghana in November 2025, according to local media. Estimated at approximately $70 million, this multi-phase initiative aims to improve network performance and offer next-generation digital services to consumers and businesses.
In this context, Telecel signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese technology company Huawei, according to a statement relayed by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on November 11. “Huawei’s proven expertise and technological leadership will help us strengthen capacity, reliability, and innovation in the Ghanaian telecom landscape,” said Patricia Obo-Nai, Managing Director of Telecel Ghana.
Telecel Group officially entered the Ghanaian market in February 2023, following the acquisition of a 70% stake in Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited, previously held by Vodafone. The company has committed to investing heavily in expanding 4G coverage and developing innovative fintech solutions, amidst the operator’s declining market share. Vodafone Ghana saw its market share fall from 24.1% in June 2017 to 18.41% in February 2023, according to data from the telecoms regulator.
With Huawei, Telecel had already deployed more than 500 4G sites in Ghana a year after its acquisition. The operator aims to increase this number to 2,500 sites within three years and achieve complete satellite-mobile coverage to guarantee internet access across the entire Ghanaian territory.
According to the GSMA, investments aimed at improving service quality can provide telecom operators with a competitive advantage. At the end of July 2025, Telecel had 7.82 million mobile subscribers, representing a market share of 19.8%. MTN largely dominates the market with 29.3 million subscribers and a 72.69% market share. AT (formerly AirtelTigo) holds third place with approximately 3.2 million subscribers and a market share of 7.93%.
