Elon Musk’s satellite broadband provider Starlink announced it switched on operations in Malawi, as the company continues its coverage expansion.

Starlink gained its licence in October 2022 from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), after applying in February of that year, on the promise that Starlink will be able to provide Malawians high-speed, low latent broadband services beamed from space.

Data from industry body the GSMA revealed there were 10.23 million mobile connections in Malawi at the start of 2022, an 8.4% year-on-year increase. Malawi has a population of under 20 million people.

Starlink recently announced it expanded into Malaysia, and Malawi became the company’s 62^nd country in its footprint since launching commercial service in the US in November 2020.

Launches were also seen in the Philippines, Guatemala, and Trinidad and Tobago.
