South Africa: Regulator releases more spectrum for Wi-Fi connectivity in the 6 GHz band
Like all other African countries, South Africa is facing a growing demand for high-speed connectivity in a context of accelerated digital transformation. Data service providers need more capacity to meet this demand.
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has released the lower part of the 6 GHz radio frequency band (5925-6425 MHz) for the provision of high-speed Internet connectivity via Wi-Fi. The regulator announced in a press release on Tuesday, May 23.
Depending on the regulator, the additional spectrum can support more simultaneous connections; offers reduced latency; provides faster data speeds and causes less interference, especially in potentially congested high-density areas and on campuses.
This initiative was made possible by amending Schedule B of the ICASA Radio Spectrum Regulations 2015. The Regulator began the process last December, following pressure over the past few months by Internet Service Providers in the Rainbow Nation.
According to the Wireless Providers Association of South Africa (WAPA), the opening of the 6 GHz frequency band should allow the deployment of Wi-Fi 6E, the latest technology in Wi-Fi. This is expected to bring in up to USD 57.76 billion to the country over the next ten years.
” Overall, the implementation of the lower 6 GHz frequency band is expected to bring significant improvements, more robust and reliable wireless communications, and an enhanced user experience for consumers and businesses everywhere.” the country ,” ICASA explained.
