Senegal: Free highlights network achievements, plans

Free Senegal has announced it now provides 3G and 4G population coverage of approximately 96% and 90%, respectively, following total network investment of more than EUR200 million (USD217.6 million). Although the operator has deployed 2,500km of optical fibre to improve transmission, Free CEO Mamadou Mbengue noted the network still faces challenges, particularly in terms of data performance. To ensure subscribers enjoy the best possible user experience, the company plans to improve connectivity in several regions by launching 5G test phases in many districts of the capital and by constructing backbones in urban centres in partnership with companies including Ericsson, SagemCom, Huawei and Helios Towers.

According to the Regulation Authority for Telecommunications and Posts (L’Autorite de Regulation des Telecommunications et des Postes, ARTP), Free had 4.811 million mobile subscriptions at 31 December 2022, equivalent to a 23.6% share of the market.
