The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has announced that it will lift a one-year suspension on the awarding of new telecommunication and broadcasting service licences on 1 October 2023. The moratorium was introduced in October last year to enable a study to be conducted into current levels of competition, saturation and existing barriers to entry in the markets. Whilst no new applications were accepted during this period, the regulator continued to process requests to modify, revoke and transfer existing service licences. CRAN’s Executive of Communication and Consumer Relations, Katrina Sikeni, said in a statement that it is essential the regulator ‘continuously studies market dynamics to align the regulatory framework to best practices and emerging trends in regulation to ensure fair competition and facilitate investments into the sector’.
