MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, plans to invest NGN600 billion (USD1.5 billion) over the next three years to expand broadband access in the West African nation, Reuters cites the firm’s CEO Karl Toriola as saying. As part of a rural connectivity programme, MTN plans to connect approximately 1,000 rural communities to its network this year and an additional 2,000 communities in 2022, while also boosting 4G coverage from the current level of around 66%.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed that MTN’s application to renew its operating licence for a further ten years from 1 September ‘is still undergoing required regulatory processes’.
