MTN Benin CEO talks up 5G
Uche Ofodile, CEO of MTN Benin, has disclosed that the mobile operator is currently deploying 5G technology. In an interview submitted by the cellco to news outlets, the executive stated that: ‘We are excited to announce the launch of 5G, which will revolutionise the way people and businesses connect and communicate.’ She added: ‘The launch of 5G is a major milestone and we believe it will have a transformative impact … 5G will enable millions of devices to communicate in real time, paving the way for a new generation of smart technologies. This is expected to revolutionise a wide range of sectors, from education and healthcare to transportation and leisure.’
5G has not yet been commercialised in Benin, but TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database notes that MTN’s Beninese mobile rival Celtiis disclosed in February 2023 that its network was now ‘fully 5G ready’ and that it was ‘actively preparing’ a 5G pilot, a development which followed an announcement from the country’s Ministry of Digital & Digitalisation (le Ministere du Numerique et de la Digitalisation [MND]) that month giving details of its ‘Agenda for the digital sector and digitisation’ for 2023, including a 5G pilot phase.
