Since 2017, the government of Mozambique has launched a national land use planning program. With regard to the advantages it can derive from satellite data for its success, it is already thinking about the axes on which to capitalize.

The Republic of Mozambique wants to develop its space strategy. She chose to learn for this purpose from Angola, which has already acquired some experience in the sector. Last week, a delegation from the Mozambican Ministry of Transport and Communications was received in audience by Manuel Homem, the Angolan Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication (MINTTICS).

During this working visit, the Mozambican delegation visited Angolan space facilities, learned from the Angolan National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN) about the different stages of the Angosat project, and experimented with the different applications developed by GGPEN within the framework of of various programs, in particular that of Earth observation, learned about the different areas that make up a satellite control and mission center, its functioning and its importance.

The great interest that Mozambique gives to the space sector falls within the framework of the socioeconomic development ambitions that the government has been carrying since 2017 through the national land use planning program.

Mozambique is aware of the many opportunities offered by space technology, which it has already been experimenting with since March 2020 through the pilot program led by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for the repair of infrastructure destroyed by the floods of Cyclone Idai in March 2019.

According to the World Bank, satellite data, backed by a relevant spatial development strategy, contributes to effective disaster management, water resources, agricultural development, climate monitoring, etc.
