2Africa is the third international submarine cable system to which Mozambique is connected. Until then, the country was served by the SEACOM and EASSY systems, since 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Meta’s 2Africa fiber optic submarine cable system has landed in Maputo. This was announced on Friday February 17 by data center operator iColo, which will host the 45,000 km infrastructure in its new facilities in the Mozambican capital .

The arrival of 2Africa in Maputo will be followed by a second installation of the submarine cable system in Nacala in the northeast of the country, we learned. The installation will be done in partnership with a local telecom operator.

The 2Africa consortium continues the gradual deployment of its infrastructure with a view to its full commissioning in 2024. The cable system has already landed in Djibouti, Italy, France, Spain, Egypt, South Africa and Madagascar . About twenty sites should host it in Africa over the next few months.

The cable reinforces Mozambique’s national telecom infrastructure. Once commissioned, it will support the other international submarine cable systems to which the country is currently connected, SEACOM and EASSY (Eastern Africa Submarin System). This should improve the quality and coverage of telecom services.

The new cable is also expected to help accelerate the digital transformation as well as the socio-economic development of Mozambique. A study by RTI International predicts that 2Africa will have an economic impact of USD 26.2-36.9 billion, equivalent to 0.42-0.58% of Africa’s GDP, within two to three years. its commissioning.
