Microsoft has announced a R5.4 billion (about $298.7 million) investment in South Africa to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure by 2027. The announcement was made on Thursday, March 6, at a conference in Johannesburg by Microsoft corporate vice president Brad Smith.

“In addition to leading the way in local technology, Microsoft’s long-standing presence in South Africa is a vote of confidence in our country and our economy. The strategic investments announced today by Microsoft are further evidence of this enduring confidence. They signal to businesses and investors that the South African economy continues to have immense potential and is a safe and secure place to do business,” said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This investment meets the country’s ambitions to become a globally competitive economy in the field of AI. The Redmond firm has been investing in the country for around thirty years and opened data centers in the cities of Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2019.

While this investment is promising, challenges remain, including unequal access to digital infrastructure, the need for adequate training to take full advantage of AI and cloud technologies, and ensuring that these advances benefit all South Africans, including those in rural or disadvantaged areas.
