Kenyan operator Jamii Telecommunications (JTL), which provides services under the brand name Faiba, has received approval to upgrade its trial LTE permit to a full operating licence, reports The Standard. The development follows a change in the Kenya Information and Communication Act of 1998 that now allows local companies to pay spectrum fees that exceed KES1 billion (USD9.7 million) in instalments. JTL entered the mobile sector with the launch of a 4G network in December 2017, after receiving a trial licence for 700MHz spectrum. The one-year trial permit was subsequently extended by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) until March 2019. ‘Jamii Telecom has already paid the first instalment and it is no longer on a trial licence,’ confirmed CA Director General Francis Wangusi.
