The European Union (EU) and the Smart Africa Alliance have announced the strengthening of their collaboration to bridge the digital divide in Africa. On Tuesday, December 3, the two parties unveiled the signing of an administrative agreement and a grant agreement to this effect.

The EU, in partnership with Germany, has committed to financially support the implementation of the “Data Governance in Africa Global Gateway” project, which aims to establish a data governance framework specific to Africa. This project will contribute to protecting citizens’ rights, attracting investment in secure data infrastructures, and facilitating cross-border data flows to support economic growth.

The EU will also provide financial support for the construction of strong electronic governance in Africa through the harmonisation of regulations at regional and continental levels, to guarantee accessible and efficient public services.

European Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela said : “Better access to digital tools is essential for economic growth and to bridge the digital divide between continents. Today’s agreements strengthen our successful partnership with Smart Africa, enabling us to accelerate digital transformation while boosting competitiveness and innovation.”

The enhanced collaboration between the European Union and the Smart Africa Alliance is in line with the common priorities of the EU and Africa – as outlined in the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa 2020-2030 and the EU Digital Compass 2030 – reaffirmed at the 2022 EU-AU Summit. At this 6th edition, held in Brussels on 17 and 18 February, an investment pledge of €150 billion was unveiled, covering various sectors, including digital, for a period of seven years.

Our shared commitment and combined resources will create concrete pathways to digital inclusion, ensuring that every African community can participate in and benefit from the digital economy.”
