The telecoms regulator is showing itself more and more intransigent in the face of regulatory breaches by operators. Its objective is to increase their responsibility in the market and to guarantee consumers a high quality experience.

Mobile operators Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and Etisalat Misr were fined 20.65 million Egyptian pounds (1.3 million USD) on Saturday May 15 for violating the rules relating to the mobile number portability (MNP). Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (ANRT) has fined incumbent Telecom Egypt £ 3.9 million; 3.95 million for Etisalat Misr; 5.8 million for Orange Egypt and 7 million for Vodafone Egypt.

According to the NTRA, the violations alleged against the telecom operators “  were mainly linked to the unjustified rejection of MNP requests, the unavailability of a response to MNP requests within 24 hours from the date of the investigation or the non-activation of the number on the operator’s network after MNP  ”. For the regulator, the MNP was established to guarantee users high quality services and the sanction imposed on telecom operators reflects the efforts made to ensure that users exercise their rights in the user-operator relationship.

The sanctioning of operators is part of all the measures taken recently by the telecoms regulator to improve the quality of the services offered to the populations, in particular the establishment of a new mechanism to measure the resolution time. user complaints from the moment they are submitted to the operator.

By hitting telecom operators in the portfolio, the ANRT wants to increase their responsibility on the telecoms market. By ensuring that they constantly improve the quality of their services, the regulator wants to guarantee populations a very high quality telecom experience.
