In partnership with companies for the exploitation of fiber optics over which it has a monopoly, Camtel would help to increase the penetration rate of fixed and mobile broadband Internet in Cameroon, which is stagnating at 22% since 2016, according to the International Finance Corporation.

Camtel, the incumbent telecom operator in Cameroon, has launched the recruitment of local companies to operate its fiber optic network (FTTH) in Yaoundé and Douala, the country’s two main cities.

”  The main mission of this partnership is the saturation of all existing ports by December 31, 2023, by allowing partner operators to have partial use rights on the FTTH lines of a building  “, explains the company. It specifies that operators can apply either for installation and maintenance operations, or for capacity resale operations, or for both.

Local companies opting for installation operations must be provided with their approval as provided for by the law governing electronic communications. Candidates must submit their files to Camtel’s headquarters in Yaoundé, no later than November 11, 2022. Only companies showing certified financing capacity can apply.

Investir au Cameroun explains that this call for partnership was launched by Camtel in a context where Cameroon does not make sufficient use of its telecom infrastructure to develop this sector. However, the country is presented as a sub-regional hub in this area, given the five submarine fiber optic cables to which it is connected (SAT3, WACS, ACE, SAIL and NCSCS).
