The Egyptian public company Telecom Egypt announced on Wednesday January 17 that it had acquired the country’s first 5G license from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) for $150 million. The resource is valid for a period of 15 years.

The new license should allow the incumbent operator to install and operate the fifth generation mobile network in Egypt. “  5G is the backbone of future technological development and, when combined with other technologies, for example fiber optic technologies, it will revolutionize our daily lives and transform the way businesses operate  ,” he said. said Mohamed Nasr (pictured, right), general manager of Telecom Egypt.

It was in 2019 that Telecom Egypt began to take an interest in 5G. In February 2019, during the global mobile show organized in Barcelona by the Global Association of Telephone Operators and Manufacturers (GSMA), the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Nokia and Ericsson to prepare its network for the 5G standard. Faced with the interest shown by the historic operator and other telecoms companies, the government began in 2021 to prepare the legal framework for 5G frequencies and licenses.

The commercial launch of 5G by Telecom Egypt is expected to meet growing consumer demand for high-speed connectivity and support digital transformation plans. Ultra-high speed will facilitate the use of e-learning, e-government, 3D video, telemedicine, virtual reality and augmented reality, streaming, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT)…

Telecom Egypt could also take advantage of its lead in the 5G segment to attract new customers and strengthen its market share against competitors like Orange, Vodafone and Etisalat. This would also allow him to increase his income.
